They won’t let you breathe
the air in your lungs burns them
the fire in your soul makes you magic

You have to fight
the freedom costs something heavy
the struggle for your breath is arduous

We will not overcome on the strength of words
oration alone breaks no chains
this is a call to brave action


Jerry Ayodele is a Nigerian-American poet, essayist and technology professional based in London, England. He has written short fiction, essays and an unreleased poetry collection focused on the politics of immigration, personal identity and ways we use language. He splits his time primarily between working in technology, writing about the ills of capitalism and catching up on as much sports journalism as possible.
