It’s Time to be Counted! Why It’s Important to Fill Out the 2020 Census

The 2020 census is entering its final stage. 

By now, you have likely received a call, an email, or a formal letter from the U.S. Census Bureau. If you have not responded to them, now is the moment to do so. It’s important to make sure that you and your family are included in the general count of U.S. residents. 

This year’s census is undoubtedly met with its own set of unique challenges due to the harsh realities of living through the COVID-19 pandemic. 

But thankfully, filling out the 2020 census form is simple and can be accomplished in a variety of ways. You can fill it out via phone call, traditional mail, or via the internet at the official 2020 census website–where it’s offered in multiple languages. 

The survey questions are simple and focus on topics like personal data, name, age, ethnicity, and other questions like your place of residency as of April 1st, 2020. Despite past controversies, the census does not ask individuals about their immigration status. 

Yes, it’s true that it is a right and a duty to be counted, but it is also a requirement of the law to participate in the census. 

The 2020 census aims to count all people in the United States and five other territories, including Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and the United States Virgin Islands.

Currently, census workers are still going door to door to locate those who have yet to register. They are also working with nursing homes, prisons, and other large facilities to ensure that everyone is accounted for by the new September 30th deadline. 

Accurate census data will make it so that legislators, business owners, teachers, and other community leaders can make better and informed decisions on improving education, health, public transportation, highway construction, and more.

It also determines the number of representative seats in Congress and those in both local and state districts. Above all, it helps establish the different ethnic and migratory segments that help the authorities make the best decisions.

The 2020 census is the 24th census that has been carried out since 1790. The law requires all to be counted and, beyond the law, it is everyone’s responsibility to be counted. 

In December of this year, the census office will deliver the data obtained to the President and the United States Congress. In March of 2021, the data will be sent out to different states for the redistribution of electoral districts. This census is not something that you can afford to overlook; it’s time to be counted.

Es probable que usted haya recibido alguna llamada, algún correo electrónico o una carta real de parte de las oficinas del censo de los Estados Unidos en busca de integrarlo al conteo general de los residentes en Estados Unidos, y en caso de que no haya respondido a los mismos, diciéndole que es el momento de hacerlo ya que el conteo importante ha entrado en su etapa final. 

Este Censo 2020 es sin dudas un reto debido a la realidad que se está viviendo en el mundo por la pandemia de COVID-19, pero a su vez es el más simple ya que se puede hacer por teléfono, correo tradicional o por internet, en el sitio oficial del censo 2020, en diferentes idiomas. 

Las preguntas son sencillas y no comprometen en absoluto el estatus migratorio del censado. Las mismas se enfocan en datos personales como nombre, edad y ascendencia étnica, otras sobre cosas como el lugar de residencia a partir del 1ro de abril del 2020.   

Más allá de ser un derecho, ser contado en el Censo es una exigencia de la ley. 

El Censo 2020 tiene como objetivo contar a todas las personas en el territorio central de Estados Unidos y en otros cinco territorios: Puerto Rico, Samoa Americana, Guam, las Islas Marianas del Norte y las Islas Vírgenes de los Estados Unidos.

Los trabajadores del Censo 2020 estarán localizando a todo el que no se haya censado. Adicionalmente, los voluntarios del censo trabajarán con hogares de ancianos, prisiones y otras instalaciones donde viven números grandes de personas para ubicar todo el que no se haya censado, terminando todo el proceso el 30 de septiembre.

Con los datos obtenidos en el Censo, los legisladores, propietarios de empresas, maestros y otros líderes comunitarios pueden tomar mejores decisiones para optimizar la educación, la salud, el transporte público, la construcción de carreteras, etcétera.

El Censo también determina la cantidad de escaños a elegir en el Congreso y la delineación de distritos legislativos y estatales. Sobre todo, ayuda a establecer los diferentes segmentos étnicos y migratorios que ayudan a las autoridades a tomar mejores decisiones. 

El Censo 2020 es el vigésimo cuarto que se realiza desde 1790. Más allá de ser un requisito por ley, es una responsabilidad personal participar en él. En diciembre de este año la oficina del Censo entregará al presidente de la nación y al Congreso de Estados Unidos los datos obtenidos y en marzo del 2021 se enviarán a los diferentes estados para la redistribución de los Distritos Electorales.
